Finally Some Good News About Obesity…. (Sort of)
November 29th, 2007 | by Timothy Kintzel, M.D. |
With all the concern about obesity in this country, it is good to hear that a recent study conducted by the CDC showed that although obesity rates remain high, there has been no real increase in adults in the last few years. The levels are currently 34% of adults aged 20 and over (over 72 million Americans). Prior to this study’s findings, the obesity rate had continued to increase over the past 25 years. Of interest the study found that the rate is the highest among 40-59 year-olds. Also, the rate of obesity is much higher in certain ethnic groups, with black women and Mexican-American woman being the highest. 61% of non-Hispanic black women 60 and over were obese. This compares to 32% of white women in the same age group.
Although there seems to be a plateauing of obesity growth in this country, rates remain alarmingly high - especially in certain groups.
