Passive Smoking Is a Risk Factor Stroke

Stroke is one of the most common causes of death and disability in developed countries, and smoking is a well recognized risk factor for having a stroke. This study evaluated the various risk factors for 151 patients who presented with a new stroke over a 12 month period in a major hospital in Spain. This group of patients who presented with a new stroke were compared to an age-matched control group(comparison group admitted for reasons other than stroke) comprising of 302 patients who were admitted to this hospital over a similar period of time. The mean age of patients was 70.6 years old and 57.6% were males. Stroke patients had a significantly higher percentage of high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease, elevated control and an active smoking history. It was also found that stroke patients had a significantly higher incidence of being exposed to passive, or secondhand, smoking.
The findings of this study suggest that a significant association exists between the exposure to secondhand smoking and the development of vascular disease. Additionally, in this study the risk of developing a stroke with passive smoking exposure appeared equivalent to the risk of being an active smoker.
